Let’s talk about it
I’m barely hungry. Am I eating enough?
Last reviewed September 19, 2026
Your appetite may have left the group chat. Your body’s need for nourishment has not.
Feeling less hungry is expected on these medications. Getting through the day on coffee, three crackers, and determination is a different situation. The goal is enough nutrition to keep you functioning while you lose weight—not winning an unofficial contest for smallest lunch.
Give the food you do eat a job
Try smaller, dependable meals rather than waiting for a hunger signal that may never show up. Make room for protein, some produce, and a source of energy you tolerate. Think yogurt with fruit and oats, eggs and toast, or tofu with rice. A shake can help on a difficult day; it doesn’t have to become your entire food personality.
A 2025 advisory from four nutrition and obesity organizations flags nutritional shortfalls as a concern when GLP-1 treatment sharply reduces food intake. It recommends attention to food quality, adequate protein, and strength training—not simply celebrating the lowest calorie total. This is expert guidance, not a trial proving everyone needs the same meal plan.
Look beyond “but the scale is going down”
Picture a hypothetical day: you skip breakfast, get full halfway through lunch, and decide dinner is unnecessary. By evening, you feel wiped out. That’s a reason to look at intake and symptoms together, not assume the medication is doing an extra-good job.
If eating is consistently difficult, or you’re becoming weak or dizzy, contact your prescriber. A registered dietitian can help find a realistic calorie and protein target; kidney disease and other conditions can change that plan. Persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down needs prompt medical attention.
Start here: look back at yesterday’s meals. Where could one manageable portion of nourishing food fit today?
