Let’s talk about it

What is the Medicare Part D bridge program, and could I qualify?

Last reviewed September 22, 2026

Yes, this is a real program. And yes, the name sounds like someone assembled it during a very long meeting.

The official name is Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. It runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 and gives certain people with Medicare Part D access to specified weight-management medicines for a $50 monthly copay. It operates separately from your usual Part D drug benefit. CMS explains the program.

Who might qualify?

According to Medicare’s eligibility guidance, adults need eligible Medicare drug coverage and must meet a qualifying BMI and health-history combination when starting treatment: BMI 35 or higher; BMI 30 or higher with certain conditions such as uncontrolled hypertension, specified heart failure, or stage 3a-or-higher kidney disease; or BMI 27 or higher with prediabetes or certain cardiovascular history.

People already receiving a GLP-1 through Part D, or with certain conditions for which regular Part D coverage may apply, aren’t eligible through this route. Your prescriber should check the exact criteria, medication, and formulation and complete the required authorization.

The detail I would not want you to miss

The $50 payment does not count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit. Extra Help doesn’t lower this program’s copay. Eligibility is specific; having a Part D card alone is not an approval.

Your next move: ask your prescriber, “Should my medication go through my regular Part D coverage or Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?” You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE. Use the official links above for the complete requirements and current covered products.
