01What it does
Thorne Protein Optimizer is a probiotic and enzyme formula designed to support protein digestion, amino-acid absorption, and digestive comfort. It combines the Mycosha™ blend with Bacillus coagulans SNZ 1969®, providing three billion live active cultures per capsule. It’s also NSF Certified for Sport.
Despite the name, it contains no protein. The chicken, yogurt, or shake still has to show up for work. Product details
02Why I carry it
When your appetite is smaller, getting enough protein can become a project. Naturally, a product promising to help you get more from that protein gets my attention.
I’ve only recently started taking this myself. It’s a new product, and I’m curious about the approach—but I haven’t used it long enough to tell you whether I notice a difference. You’re getting my first impressions here, not a miraculous transformation after three capsules.
What interests me is the focus on getting more from the protein I’m already eating. The research is still early, so I’m keeping my expectations reasonable. Enough protein and resistance training remain the foundation. This one is auditioning for a supporting role.
But “gets my attention” and “everyone needs it” are two very different things.
Let’s talk about it.
The idea behind this formula is to support the digestive side of the equation. I find that interesting, particularly when someone is working on protein intake and digestive comfort. But I want to be clear about how much the research actually tells us.
In a small crossover trial with 22 participants completing the study, adding Bacillus coagulans SNZ 1969 to whey protein increased peak blood levels of three amino acids. The overall amino-acid exposure did not improve significantly. That’s preliminary evidence worth watching—not proof that this capsule turns a small meal into a bigger one. Read the study
That study also didn’t test this finished Thorne formula or people taking GLP-1 medications. I wouldn’t promise that it prevents muscle loss, fixes slow stomach emptying, or lets you get away with eating less protein.
My priorities still come first: enough protein, resistance training, and a routine you can actually maintain. This is an optional addition with a narrower job, rather than another bottle everyone needs to squeeze into breakfast.
And if you’re already taking a probiotic, I’d want a clear reason before adding another. More products don’t automatically make a better routine.
03How I use it
I take one capsule with my morning protein shake. At this point, the shake should probably have its own staff directory.
I’ve only recently added this one, so it’s too early to say whether I notice a difference. Thorne’s directions are one capsule daily with a meal, or as recommended by your healthcare professional. Directions
Persistent vomiting, significant abdominal pain, or difficulty tolerating meals deserves a conversation with your prescriber—not an attempt to push through by adding a digestive supplement.
